Rīga FC marches on in Europe

Take note – story published 4 years ago

On August 15, Latvian football club Rīga FC enjoyed possibly the finest hour in its history so far, playing out a 2:2 draw at Finnish football club Helsinki HJK in a second-leg UEFA Europa League third qualification round qualifier.

As the score on aggregate between the two clubs ended 3:3, Rīga FC advances to the final qualification round, due to the away goals rule.

The Latvian club was able to battle back after going down 0:1 and 1:2 during the match in Finland with Ukrainian forward Roman Debelko scoring both goals for the Latvian club.

Rīga FC will now take on Danish club Kobenhavn home and away in the fourth and final qualification round. The winner on aggregate will qualify for the group stage of this season's UEFA Europa League.
