Rīga marathon gathers thousands of runners

On Sunday, May 15, the Rimi Riga Marathon united elite athletes and runners-for-fun, with thousands participating and observing, Latvian Television reported.

Runners went out on the streets in the classic marathon, half-marathon, 10 km and 6 km routes.

Among the 10-kilometer runners was also the Ukrainian ambassador in Latvia Oleksandr Mishchenko. Below is LTV's interview with him post-run (in English).

 1038 athletes applied for the classic marathon, 2632 runners for the half-marathon, 3467 participants in the 10 km distance, while the 6 km distance, which was painted in Ukrainian flag colors, brought together the largest number of participants – 4514 runners.

The number of registered runners across all distances on Saturday and Sunday reached 17,033 people from 76 countries. 1928 foreign runners participated. Elite runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Belgium, Israel, Denmark, Paraguay, Croatia, Lithuania and Uzbekistan ran in Riga, as well as marathon-tourists and runners for fun.

Aigars Nords, leader of the Rimi marathon organizing team, said after the competition that he was pleased to see a new record of the Riga marathon in the half-marathon distance, adding that this year's running was a rehearsal before the World Championship in Riga next year, where the organizers hope for the arrival of 40,000 participants.
