Rīga marathon will sort runners in three safety levels

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Rīga marathon will have three different starts depending on the participants' status in relation to Covid-19 risks, the marathon director Aigars Nords told Latvian Television July 29.

The Rimi Riga marathon is scheduled for August 28 and 29. Currently, it is planned to take place in three safety levels:

  • the green start - a joint start for people who are vaccinated or have overcome Covid-19 and can provide the EU digital certificate;
  • the yellow start - for people who have a negative Covid-19 test certificate, the marathon will begin at individually allocated times to avoid crowding;
  • the virtual start - intended for participants who do not want to start on-site or perform a test.

The Covid-19 incidence rate continues to grow in Latvia. On Thursday, July 29, the 14-day cumulative number of cases per 100,000 residents increased to 35.7.

Marathon director Aigars Nords said that in the event of cumulative morbidity rising to 120, the event could be cancelled for those who cannot provide a Covid-19 certificate.

Nords said that the situation currently, thanks to vaccines and planned starts at different levels of safety, was completely different from last October, when the Cabinet decided to cancel the marathon that was postponed from spring to autumn, last-minute.

“At the time the decision was made, the whole of my team, 1,000 people, was on the track and [built it] to make things happen in the coming days. But the decision was taken the way it was had to be. Now the situation is completely different and we offer completely different solutions,” Nords said.

In 2021, there will be a significantly smaller number of participants, viewers and entertainment opportunities, but the organisers promise to take care to make the event as pleasant as ever.

Registration for the marathon takes place until August 5.
