Rīga offers free sports activities for all

A variety of free sports activities take place in nearly every neighborhood of Rīga: it is possible to Nordic walk, swim, do yoga, or simply exercise, Latvian Television reported on August 10.

Diāna and her children regularly attend free exercise sessions in Rīga, Viesturdārzs. The opportunity is offered to any resident or city guest in the “Mēs par veselīgu Rīgu” [We for healthy Rīga] project. “We're coming to exercise for the second summer. It's near home and in good time for me,” said Diāna. “It's a pleasure to exercise outside in the summer, some extra movement. It is no serious gym, but free time to keep in shape outdoors.”

“This is an excellent opportunity for the neighborhood to move, to be out in the fresh air and also to meet their neighborhood residents,” said trainer Adelīna Priedniece. “There is certainly no need for prior physical readiness. We have young people and older people, all age groups. We adjust the classes so everyone gets to move and exercise.”

Meanwhile, the Rīga forest manager Rīgas meži has created trails for orienteering in Mežaparks. "There are five different routes in the Mezapark. It's for all audiences,” said Ieva Bērziņa, spokeswoman for Rīgas Meži. “The smaller route is a short two kilometers. Families with children can certainly go through this route and enjoy the green of Mežaparks. Athletes, meanwhile, have an offer of 13.5 kilometers. You can run right through the whole of Mežaparks."

Information on free classes and times can be found on the website veseligsridzinieks.lv.
