Sevastova into US Open semi final

Latvian tennis star Anastasija Sevastova continued her memorable year September 4 by reaching the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tennis tournament for the first time in her career.

In the quarter finals of the US Open she overcame local favorite and reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

In doing so the Latvian, who currently ranks 18th in the WTA standings and is 19th seed at the US Open, beat the world’s number three player.

In her semi final match Sevastova will take on another US tennis star, Serena Williams.

The win further justifies her decision to return to competition in 2015 having retired from tennis in 2013 with back problems.

In 2017 compatriot Aļona Ostapenko became the first Latvian ever to win a grand slam tennis tournament when she triumphed at the French Open.
