Take note – story published 4 years ago

A special ceremony (which you can watch above) held in Sigulda February 15 saw justice finally done with the official awarding of Olympic gold medals to the Latvian bobsleigh team that should have been on the top rank of the Sochi Winter Olympic podium in 2014.

The four-man bob piloted by Oskars Melbārdis finished second at the Sochi track in Russia and originally received silver medals, but the subsequent revelations about wholsesale cheating by Russian Olympians showed that in fact the Latvian team were the rightful winners of gold.

The names of Oskars Melbārdis, Daumants Dreiškens, Arvis Vilkaste and Jānis Strenga now go into the history books and the names of doping cheat Alexander Zubkov and his crew are erased.

In addition, Melbārdis un Daumants Dreiškens received Olympic bronze medals for the two-man bob from Sochi where, again, the Russian medalists were disqualified.

The injustice was finally put right today in front of an enthusiastic local crowd on the same day that Sigulda hosted a World Cup bobsled event.

"It was a big surprise to have so many people here," said Melbārdis, thanking everyone for their support.
