Tour de France first for Latvia's Toms Skujiņš

Take note – story published 5 years ago

Road racer Toms Skujiņš made history July 11 by becoming the first Latvian ever to wear one of coveted leaders' jerseys on the Tour de France.

On stage 5 of this year's Tour, 27-year-old Skujiņš secured the famous polka dot "King of the Mountains" jersey, and will wear it on stage 6, a fantastic achievement on his debut tour.

Not only that, but according to cycling portal velonews, at the stage end he came out with what we think is one of the best sports quotes we've heard in a long time:

“Obviously the Tour is the Tour, blah blah blah,” he joked.

While the Tour has yet to head into the proper mountains where the polka dot jersey will ultimately be won, it remains a fantastic achievement for the Latvian rider, who has already won a large number of fans for his combative and fearless riding style. Keep a look out for the polka dot jersey on stage 6 today.
