World floorball championship starts in Rīga

Take note – story published 7 years ago

From December 3 to 11, Rīga is the center of the floorballing universe with 16 teams from around the globe arriving to fight for world championship medals and six openings at the Poland The World Games 2017.

At the moment of writing, the first game is already underway with Team Switzerland leading over Team Estonia.

Eight games will take place this weekend, with Latvia battling Sweden - who are the favorites of the tournament - Saturday at 7.30 p.m. GMT+3 and playing the Czech Republic on Sunday at 6.15 p.m.

Interestingly, an introductory announcement for the tournament by Tomas Eriksson, president of the International Floorball Federation, discusses the chance of making floorball an Olympic sport.

"[..] there now is a realistic chance and possibility for new sports to be included, either directly on the Olympic Program or via the sports labs, sports initiation programs in either the Olympic Games or the Youth Olympic Games," he writes.

If you're a local, you can watch some of the games HERE.

But if you're not, free viewing options are still plenty.
