Latvian theater awards handed out

On November 23, 2024, the Valmiera Theater hosted the main annual event of the performing arts - the 31st annual award ceremony of the Theater Award "Spēlmaņu nakts." 

The Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to actresses Lidija Pupure and Ilze Vazdika of the Dailes Theatre.

The Valmiera Theater production "Pazudušais dēls" won the award for small form production of the year, its director Reinis Suhanovs was named director of the year, Māra Mennika won actress of the year for her role as Roplainiete, while composer Jēkabs Nīmanis received the award for "New Musical Work of the Year". The performance also won the LSM.lv Audience Award.

The Liepāja Theater's production "Latviešu raķetes" was awarded the prize for the Large Form Performance of the Year.

The Latvian Puppet Theatre's "Sibīrijas Haiku" won the jury's award for children's and/or young people's performance of the year, as well as the international foreign critics' jury's award for best performance and the Theater Innovation Award.

The Valmiera Theatre team of "Jāzeps un viņa brāļi" also received several awards - actor Aksels Aizkalns was awarded as the Young Stage Artist of the Year, Krista Dzudzilo and Reinis Dzudzilo were awarded as the Stage Designers of the Year, while Linda Milija was awarded as the Choreographer of the Year.

The second Young Stage Artist of the Year award went to director Matīss Kaža for his performance "Maigā vara" at the National Theater, while Aleksandrs Grebņevs won the Lighting or Video Artist of the Year award for the video of this performance.

Actor Kaspars Znotiņš received the "Actor of the Year" award for his role in the New Riga Theater's production of "Melnais gulbis", as well as the International Foreign Critics' Jury Award for Best Individual Performance.

This year, the awards for Best Supporting Actress went to Evija Krūze for her performance as Mother in the National Theatre's production of "Ugunsseja" and Volodimirs Gorislavecs for his performance as Birgermeister in Mikhail Chekhov's Riga Russian Theatre production of "Vecās dāmas vizīte".

The jury recognized the play "Tēvs klusums" by Rasa Bugavičute-Pēce, staged at Liepāja Theatre, as the new play of the year in dramaturgy.

The Costume Designer of the Year Award went to Kate Krolle and Reinis Bērziņš for their work in the theatre company "Kvadrifrons" production "Ērces".

The Audience Awards, determined by a vote organized by LSM.lv, the Latvian Theatre Workers' Union, and the theatre catalogue izrades.lv, went to "Pazudušais dēls" by Valmiera Theatre, as well as the National Theatre actors Maija Doveika and Egons Dombrovskis.

The children and youth jury awarded the favorite prize to the Latvian Puppet Theatre's performance "Sivēnam pa pēdām".
