Acclaimed scenographer Andris Freibergs dies

Andris Freibergs, distinguished scenographer and professor, has died aged 83, head of Latvian Theater employees union Ojārs Rubenis told Latvian Television.

Freibergs has created the design of more than 230 performances in various Latvian and foreign theaters, has been a long-standing employee of the Latvian National Opera, honorary scenographer and consultant.

Freibergs has been the artist of Andrejs Upītis' Academic Drama Theatre (1965-1973), the main artist of the National Youth Theater (1973-1992), the main artist of the Daile Theater (2002-2005), the main scenographer of the National Opera of Latvia (1992-2019), teaching at the Latvian Academy of Arts since 1971, head of the art academy's Scenography department since 1994, Professor of the Latvian Academy of Arts since 1996, emeritus professor of the Latvian Academy of Arts since 2010.

He has received a series of awards both in Latvia and abroad, including Latvia's highest State decoration – the Order of the Three Stars.
