Bank profits in Latvia 20% smaller than last year so far

Latvian monetary financial institutions (MFIs), mainly banks, made a profit of EUR 379 million in the first eight months of this year, which is 19.5% less than in the corresponding period of 2023, according to information published by the Latvian central bank (Bank of Latvia), LETA reports Monday.

In August, MFIs made a profit of EUR 48 million.

The total assets of MFIs as of August 31 2024 amounted to EUR 28.453 billion, which is 5.9% or EUR 1.581 billion more than at the end of August 2023.

At the end of August this year, the balance of loans granted by Latvian MFIs to residents stood at €14.006 billion, up 2.8% on a year earlier.

In the first eight months of 2023, monetary financial institutions posted a profit of €470.9 million, while in 2023 as a whole, monetary financial institutions posted a profit of €573.5 million, 75.8% more than in 2022.

MFIs are credit institutions and financial corporations that accept deposits from customers other than MFIs, and grant loans and invest in securities for their own account.
