Latvia's investment agency head finally appointed

Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis (Union of Greens and Farmers) has appointed Ieva Jāgere as the new Director of the Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIAA), the Ministry of Economics announced on November 13.

Jāgere is a finance and investment expert with more than 15 years of experience in corporate finance and has managed large-scale investment attraction transactions. She is also the Managing Partner of Callidus Capital, a financial and investment advisory firm, and an independent member of Indexo's Internal Audit Committee.

From 2016 to 2022, Jagere was CEO of Callidus Capital, and prior to that she was Head of Corporate Finance at Oaklins Baltics for more than three years, responsible for sourcing and managing various client investments and transactions.

The new Director of LIAA, selected by the Minister of Economics, holds a Master's degree in Business Administration from the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga and a Master's degree in International Economics and Business from the University of Latvia.

LIAA is a direct administrative institution under the authority of the Minister of Economics, whose aim is to promote the competitiveness and export performance of Latvian companies in international markets, to encourage the growth of foreign investment, to implement the national tourism development policy and the national innovation policy.

The post of LIAA Director has been vacant since the end of September last year, when Kaspars Rožkalns left the post. Raivis Bremšmits, Deputy State Secretary for Economic Affairs at the Ministry of the Economy, was appointed to the post of LIAA Director temporarily on June 1.

A record number of 52 candidates applied for the post of LIAA Director, and as a result Viktors Valainis was offered a choice between two finalists, Baiba Bļodniece and Fredis Bikovs.

However, the minister said he would like to see more information on the shortlist, as the offer did not match what he expected from the commission, LTV's "De facto" reported. The State Chancellery, however, pointed out that they were prevented by law from disclosing such information to the Minister. As a result, the Minister decided to terminate the competition for the post of Director of LIAA without result and to start fresh.
