A fire broke out early Wednesday June 23 morning in Iecava at the egg producer Balticovo's hangar. 4,500 laying hens burned in the fire, according to the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD).

VUGD said that the call to Iecava had been received at 4 in the morning. 18 people had evacuated from the facility before the arrival of VUGD.

28 firefighters worked at the site of the event. At 6:58 AM, the spread of the fire was contained. The burning area of the hangar-type building was 2,640 square meters. According to the information provided by VUGD, 4,500 hens were burned in the fire but no humans were harmed. Firefighters managed to protect the adjacent production building and the barns from the flames.

Balticovo spokesman Toms Auškāps said that the cause of the fire was still under investigation. He said that the loss of 4,500 laying hens was substantial but not huge as there are a total of 130,000 hens in the holding.

The company still estimates the losses, but the fire will not affect egg production and product supply, said Auškāps.
