In the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of Liepāja, the first company with Norwegian capital Norplast Piemare has commenced its activities, Latvian Radio reported December 13.

The company has been operating in Saldus until now, but now has purchased a port company in Liepāja. In 2022, the company plans to start producing large-size composite products for the fish-farming and oil-producing industry to export them to Norway.

The arrival of Norwegian investors in the city is a new development. Liepāja has considerable experience with Scandinavian companies so far, said Gunārs Ansiņš, Chairman of the Liepaja City Council.

“I want to highlight the historic moment when I started working with Danish companies in Liepāja [..], step by step, we are seeing many Danish companies at the moment. I believe and hope that the first Norwegian messenger could be an equivalent story in the future and that the interest of the Norwegian business environment in the city of Liepāja will grow,” Ansiņš said.

The Norwegian company Norpartners, which is the parent company of Norplast, specializes in the production and assembly of glass fibre cells, has so far developed its activities in Saldus at five plants. In the past, the company also used Liepāja port to transport its products. The company has now taken a significant step in acquiring one for the city's port companies.

Gatis Ginters, head of the Norplast Piemare company in Liepāja, said that the company chose Liepāja ports as the most promising place to develop new and innovative composite products in the long term.

"The company will be engaged in large-scale composite production. Initally, [these will be] composite materials designed to equip the port and sea — buoys, lighthouses. At the same time, we will produce a variety of pumps and other items for the oil sector,” Ginyers said.

Next year, the company will start working on its main production – large fish farming cages to help clean up fjords.
