Agricultural prices were up by a third in 2022

Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB) and published April 4 show that in 2022, compared to 2021, the price index of agricultural output rose by 33.9 %, mainly due to an increase of 41.7 % in the price index of animal products and of 29.3 % in price index of crop products.

In 2022 the level of crop product prices was mainly influenced by the rise in grain price index (of 37.1 %, of which prices of rye grew by 56.2 %, of barley by 44.2 %, of oats by 65.0 %, and of wheat slightly less – by 34.9 %) as well as in potato price index (of 32.7 %).

The level of animal product prices was affected by the increase in raw milk (48.7 %), egg (48.0 %) and meat price index (30.1 %, of which prices of beef and veal grew by 40.6 % and of pork by 34.2 %). Slower increase was recorded in prices of mutton and goat meat (20.4 %), poultry (18.0 %), and broilers (17.9 %).

In 2022 the highest rise in crop production sector was registered in prices of grain, potatoes and pulses.

The average purchase price of grain grew by 41.3 % (from 196.84 EUR/t in 2021 to 278.10 EUR/t in 2022), with the sharpest rise in rye and barley prices (57.2 % and 42.6 %, respectively). Prices of wheat, which took 85 % of all grain purchased in 2022, went up by EUR 78.44 or 38.8 % and reached 280.45 EUR/t.

A significant increase was recorded in prices of potatoes and pulses (44.1 % and 36.3 %, respectively). Compared to 2021, the average purchase price of potatoes rose by 67.35 EUR/t and of pulses by 91.43 EUR/t.

The average purchase price of rape seeds grew from 477.62 EUR/t in 2021 to 565.63 EUR/t in 2022 or by 18.4 %.

Compared to the year before, upturn was observed in prices of all types of vegetables: prices of carrots went up by 26.7 %, of onions by 19.1 %, of cabbage by 14.0 %, of tomatoes by, 11.5 %, and of cucumbers by 7.6 %. The increase of vegetable prices was caused by the production costs, yield harvested, quality of the harvested products, as well as sales.

In 2022 the highest rise in livestock production sector (of 48.2 %) was registered in price of raw cow’s milk which increased from 318.01 EUR/t in 2021 to 471.18 EUR/t in 2022.

Significant upturn – by 874.60 EUR/t or 40.7 % – was also registered in price of beef and veal while the average purchase price of pork went up by 414.22 E|UR/t or 31.8 %.

The average purchase price of eggs, compared to the year before, rose by 42.2 % (from 7.18 EUR/100 pcs in 2021 to 10.21 EUR/100 pcs in 2022.
