Rīga gets EU funding for social housing

Riga will receive more than ten million euros from the European Union (EU) funds for the development of 351 social housing units, which could reduce the queue for apartments by 18-20%, the municipal council said on August 9.

Viesturs Zeps, Chairman of the Housing and Environment Committee of Riga City Council, said that the signing of contracts with the Central Financial Contracts Agency for the implementation of two projects to create social housing is the most significant investment in recent years to improve the scope and quality of municipal housing services.

"By implementing these important projects, the municipality is tackling several problems at the same time - persons in need of municipally supported housing will be assisted, and municipally owned buildings will be rehabilitated and transformed into energy-efficient buildings with apartments that meet modern requirements," Ziediņa said.

Currently, more than 11,000 people in Riga benefit from housing support programs.

More than 190 municipally-owned apartments are to be renovated and modernized, and three buildings are to be renovated, providing accommodation for at least 155 households.

"This is an important step in reducing the housing queues in Riga," Zeps added.

The project will renovate three residential buildings - Lielupes Street 1, k-10, Dolomīta Street 1, and Prūšu Street 25A.

Lielupes Street will have 38 apartments, including four group apartments, Dolomīta Street will have 39 apartments and Prūšu Street will have 78 apartments. Thus, 155 households will receive municipal housing assistance after the implementation of the project.

The project is planned to be implemented by the end of 2027. The total budget of the project is EUR 19.6 million, of which EUR 7.65 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and EUR 11.97 million from the municipality.

It also plans to renovate 196 unrented apartments owned by the municipality by the end of 2027. The total project budget is €2.95 million, of which €2.5 million is from the ERDF and €0.45 million from the municipality.
