Municipalities will be able to pay the primary aid of up to €3,000 for restoring or replacing the roof or windows of the house for those whose properties have been hit by Monday's storm, the local governments and Finance Ministry agreed on August 9.

Finance Minister Arvils Ašeradens (New Unity) met with municipal leaders whose areas are most affected by the storm on Monday, August 7. The parties agreed on a common approach for the provision of primary assistance to affected households and residents, which should be provided by local authorities without delay.

The worst situation is in the municipality of Dobele, where several hundred households have been damaged by the storm.

During the meeting, it was agreed that local governments would be able to first pay their citizens primary aid for the renovation or replacement of the roof and windows of the house. It will be given to all residents whose properties (residential homes) have been hit by the storm.

In addition to these initiatives, municipalities will also be able to decide on increased support for their residents on a case-by-case basis.

Cabinet regulations have also been proposed which will provide that state will be able to support municipalities in cases of similar disasters.
