11 through to second round in competition to become tax chief

Take note – story published 5 years ago

On May 8 a commission to find Latvia's next tax chief decided to put 11 out of the previous 19 candidates through to a second round of an open competition, the State Chancellery said.

The committee will continue vetting the candidates, and the next stage of the competition will start after ten working days.

The successful applicant will serve a five-year term.

The head of the country's State Revenue Service gets a lot of public attention, with the previous tax chief Ilze Cīrule - who died recently at the age of 54 - having carried out a series of reforms within the service to optimize its earnings, encourage tax discipline, cut staff, and improve the reputation of the service which was by some Latvians seen by little more than a state-run racket.
