Latvia's tax service to take a closer look at people with undeclared income

The State Revenue Service (VID) has found 70,000 individuals who have a significant discrepancy of at least €20,000 between their bank account turnover and their income declared to the VID. After September 1, the VID plans to send mass notifications, VID said August 13.

Notification will be made via the VUD electronic declaration system (EDS), but letters will be sent to those with the largest discrepancies between bank account turnover and income declared to the VID.

The Service has found that out of 70 000 persons, 5500 have a difference between their bank account turnover and their income declared to the VID of over €100,000, 13,000 have a difference between €50,000 and €100,000, and 51,000 have a difference between €20,000 and €50,000.

The VID management "wants to believe that most of it is non-taxable income", VID said.

This is a new method that the VID wants to use to get the public to pay their taxes.

The VID urges people not to worry. If they have forgotten, they should submit an annual declaration or make updates and explain to the VID the origin of the money to justify not declaring the income.

The VID invites you to declare your income within three to four weeks. The sooner you respond to the notice, the better.

If there is no response, the VID will contact the person again and, if there is no response, it will launch an in-depth audit and may issue a bill.

No one will be penalized if they declare their income. Only those who deliberately do not clarify, do not reply, and do not react to VID's notifications will be penalized, said Baiba Šmite-Roķe, Director General of VID.
