Country of origin must be shown on food products as of September in Latvia

On Tuesday, August 13, the government agreed on the procedure for displaying the country of production of goods iin grocery stores.

Traders will have to indicate the country of origin of the products as of September 1, 2024.

The country of production will have to be indicated on the price label of the product or product group at the choice of the trader.

If all the products in the shop are made in the same country, the indication must be at the point of sale.

The country of production must be indicated in writing by the name of the country or a picture of its flag.

The geopolitical situation is one of the most important factors why this issue is currently being raised, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. The change is expected to allow buyers to choose not to support aggressor countries when buying produce from them, as well as to focus attention on local produce.

The new requirement will enter into force on September 1 this year.
