"The State Chancellery has received applications from 19 applicants in an open contest for the post of Director General of the State Revenue Service... The competition takes place in three rounds; in the first stage the competition commission will evaluate the compliance of the applicants with the requirements of education and professional experience, taking into account the documents submitted by the applicants," an official notice said.
The vacancy was created by the sudden death in March of the head of the tax service, Ilze Cirule, as previously reported by LSM. She had headed the tax service since November 2016 and was credited with restoring credibility to an institution that was held in extremely low regard by a large part of society.
The successful applicant will serve a five-year term.
Speaking on LTV Thursday morning, Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola declined to say how long the process of finding a new tax chief was likely to take, saying only: "I hope that in the nearest time we will have a new tax service director... there will be a choice to be made... I look forward to it as there is a great deal of work to do."
