Latvians got frequently scammed in first half of year

Customers of Latvia's four largest banks were defrauded of €9.5 million in the first six months of this year, 86% more than in the first half of last year, Latvian Radio reported on July 21, referring to Finance Latvia Association's data.

This year, 4,795 fraud cases have been detected, 45% more than in the first half of last year.

In the first six months of this year, 8,375 fraud attempts worth a total of €6.415 million were prevented.

In the first half of the year, 2,733 telephone scams were detected, involving €5.7 million. There were also 1,602 investment frauds, involving €2.7 million, and 460 other frauds, involving €1.03 million.

Compared to the first half of last year, the number of telephone fraud cases increased by 2.4 times, investment fraud cases decreased by 3.3% and other types of fraud cases decreased by 9.3%.
