Sanctions against Russia are working, insist European Finance Ministers

Latvian Finance Minister Arvils Ašeradens is among eight European Union finance ministers who have published a joint opinion piece insisting that sanctions against Russia are working.

The full text of the ministers' thinking has been published in English by The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom and can be read here.

"There are many signs that the Russian war economy is deteriorating. The sanctions and other measures to weaken the Russian economy are effective, but even more can be done. We must continue to increase pressure on Putin’s regime and support Ukraine," say the ministers, who say loopholes should be closed to further srengthen the sanctions regime.

"Supporting Ukraine and undermining Russia’s capacity to wage war at every turn should be the top priority of every democratic country," they say.

Finance ministers from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland and the Netherlands are the signatories of the opinion piece.
