Slight uptick in Latvia's retail sector

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) published by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) September 27 show that, compared to August 2023, in August 2024 total retail trade turnover in Latvia rose by 0.8 %.

Turnover of retail trade in food products fell by 4.6%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 5.0 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 0.6 %.

Compared to August 2023, the most notable turnover rise was recorded in retail sale via mail order houses or via the Internet (of 14.5 %), retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (8.9 %) and retail sale of cosmetics and toiletries (7.1 %). Turnover drop was registered in retail sale in stalls or markets (12.6 %) and retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (2.4 %).

"In general, on an annual basis retail trade has been stagnant for a long time, and there is no important turning point in August either... The overall picture is improved by retail trade of non-food products (+5 %), where, compared to August last year, turnover has risen by their share in almost all largest manufacturing sectors," said Ieva Vanaga, head of the Trade and Services Statistics Section of the CSB.

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 0.8% (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to July, in August 2024, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises rose by a more modest 0.3 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices.

Turnover of retail trade in food products fell by 1.4%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 1.5 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 0.2 %.
