Online bookings are booming across Europe

During the first quarter of 2024, guests spent 123.7 million nights in short-term rental accommodation in the EU, booked via Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor. This corresponds to an increase of 28.3% compared with the same period in 2023, according to Eurostat data published July 28.

Platform tourism continued to set new monthly record values: in January 2024, 33.3 million nights were spent in accommodation booked via online platforms, showing an increase of 16.7% compared with January 2023. February registered 41.2 million nights booked via platforms (+19.0% compared with February 2023) and in March, the figure was 49.2 million (a sharp increase of +48.0%).

Though the actual number of online bookings in Latvia is small relative to the tourism heavyweights such as Spain, Italy or Portugal, growth has been no less impressive here, as shown by the table below. The tourism high season of mid-2023 saw growth of 38% in bookings for the second quarter of 2023 and 29% in the third quarter.
