Latvia loses an average €0.5m to cash register fraud each day, said State Revenue Service head Ilze Cīrule appearing on LTV May 31.

She said that using rigged cash registers is most widespread in retail and food industries.

According to Cīrule the tax service will come out with several cases of fraud in the food industry by Midsummer.

She said that the service will not retreat from implementing the upcoming cash register reform starting July 1 as it had been adopted a few years ago.

More than two years ago Latvia decided to change the way businesses can use cash registers. Businesses did not welcome the step.

A number of large scale tax evasions schemes involving rigged cash registers have been uncovered in Latvia, most notably in connection with the restaurants owned by firm Lage Ko, including the Gan Bei chain.
