Baiba Rubesa becomes chairwoman of Rail Baltica company

The council of the Rail Baltica joint venture RB Rail has approved Baiba Rubesa as the chairwoman of the board and the executive director of the company, LETA news agency reported Tuesday.

RB Rail is a joint venture between Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

Rubesa will start working at the post on October 29. Her wage has not been disclosed yet.

Her LinkedIn profile states she has worked at marketing departments of Volkswagen Group and Statoil, among others. She owns a consulting firm that has had contracts with the German government.

Rubesa was born to Latvian emigrants in Canada. She started her career as the head of the press service of Statoil in 1996 and became executive director in 2000. In 2008 she was promoted and worked at the Azerbaijan StatoilHydro ASA, and served as the Vice President on Corporate Social Responsibility at Statoil soon afterwards (LETA news archive).

In 2012 she became a Supervisory Board Member for the Citadele bank. According to info on LinkedIn, her contract ended in April 2015.

The joint venture RB Rail was created in November 2014 with the founders' capital of €1.95 mln. The company will oversee the design, construction and marketing parts of the project. 

Rail Baltica is a proposed high-speed line to link Helsinki with Berlin through the Baltic capitals by 2024.

The key goal of the project is to renew regional integration by re-joining the Baltic states with the European rail network. The project will cost Latvia about 1.27 billion euro. It is co-funded by Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The first part of the project acquired more than 80% in funding from the CEF.
