The influential Foreign Investors Council in Latvia (FICIL) has a new chairperson in the form of Julia Sundberg of the Fortum energy company.

Swedish Sundberg was elected at a July 4 meeting of the FICIL board and will take over from the previous chairperson Zlata Elksniņa-Zaščirinska who will continue to serve as a FICIL Board member.

“According to the vision of FICIL, Latvia should become the most investment-friendly and business-friendly country in the Baltic Sea Region. To achieve this, it is essential to maintain an active dialogue with policymakers: to explain and recall what is to be done to improve the business environment and increase Latvia’s competitiveness in the region," Sundberg said.

The main priorities of FICIL are higher education reform, development of digital economy and effective combating of financial crimes, plus labor availability in Latvia, waste management, energy policies, and investment protection, she added.

FICIL has a powerful voice within the Latvian economy and holds frequent consultative meetings with the government, as well as producing various pieces of research that help identify the strengths and weaknesses of the economy from a foreign investors' point of view.
