Estonian Air accuses airBaltic of unfair competition

Estonia’s national aviation company Estonian Air has accused Latvia’s national airline airBaltic of unfair competition, reported Estonian daily newspaper Postimees Tuesday.

According to Estonian Air head Jan Palmer it is not fair competition that airBaltic has opened the same routes served by Estonia’s passenger carrier.

“To tell the truth, I don’t understand why Europe’s institutions have allowed this. Everyone knows that airBaltic gets help from the Latvian state. They use this state money to compete with us, but we’re not allowed to do so,” Palmer said.

Both airlines do offer summer routes to Paris, Berlin and Vienna, Postimees points out.

“Of course, this will affect us. Fewer flights are filling up this April compared to last year,” announced the Estonian carrier’s chief executive.

“Vienna is a new destination, there’s nothing to compare to. But regarding Paris and Berlin the indicators have fallen,” he added.

He also opined that airBaltic has been significantly affected by the Ukraine crisis, having lost several routes toward eastern destinations.

“They have extra planes, that’s why they’re opening new routes,” Palmers concluded.

Last week airBaltic announced it would be launching several new routes for the summer season.
