Extending microenterprise tax regime rejected

Saeima supported amendments to the Microenterprise Tax Law in the final reading Wednesday, turning down several proposals - and a protest -  calling for extending the microenterprise tax regime, reported LETA.

Latvian Association of Regions, For Latvia from the Heart, and Saeima Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee previously proposed that taxpayers could apply for the status of a microenterprise taxpayer also after June 30, 2017, contrary to what the law currently says.

Current microenterprise taxpayers, who will want to continue their business after December 31, 2018, will have to register as corporate taxpayers or personal income tax payers until December 15, 2018.

Opposition MP Inguna Sudraba (Latvia from the Heart) said that the current tax shouldn't be phased out prior to developing support mechanisms for smaller businesses.

While Welfare Minister Jānis Reirs (Unity) said that while the tax had at one time helped increase employment, currently it only helps optimizing taxes.

The amendments were supported by 55 MPs, while 36 voted against.
