Take note – story published 3 years ago

Data published February 3 by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in 2020, compared to 2019, the volume of industrial production output according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices decreased by 1.7%.

It was affected by a decrease in volume in manufacturing - by 1.2 % and in electricity and gas supply - by 7.2 %. In turn, in mining and quarrying, the increase by 8.7 % was observed.

The decrease in manufacturing output in 2020 compared to the previous year was influenced by the Covid-19 pandemic, especially its first wave in the spring, and related unfavourable factors - cessation of production (downtime), decrease in production demand (termination of the activities of business partners or customers), the impact of closed borders on the supply of materials and exports of manufactured goods, especially in sectors such as the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (output decreased by 17.3 %), the manufacture of textiles (a decrease of 11.2 %),  the manufacture of wearing apparel (-8.3 %) and manufacture of  beverages (-8.2 %).

In turn, the increase in production in 2020, compared to 2019, was in printing and reproduction of recorded media - by 6.8 % and in manufacture of computers, electronic and optical products. With output growing significantly in the fourth quarter of 2020, increase in 2020 was observed in manufacturing industry having the largest share in industrial production - manufacture of wood, and of products of wood and cork - by 4.1 % and manufacture of electrical equipment - by 5.7 %.

In December 2020, compared to December 2019, manufacturing production output according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices increased by 4.7 %. Production output increase was registered in manufacturing - by 5.1 %, in mining and quarrying - by 15.2 %, but decreased in electricity and gas supply - by 0.6 %.

Compared to December 2019, the production volume increase was observed in the of most manufacturing sectors, including manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture - by 17 %, manufacture of furniture - by 21.6 %, manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers - by 17 % and manufacture of wearing apparel - by 11.1 %.

In turn, the production volume decreased in repair and installation of machinery and equipment - by 33.1 %, in the manufacture of textiles - by 17.9 %, in the manufacture of beverages - by 15.9 % and in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products - by 11.5 %. Output also decreased in food production - by 3.2 % and in manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment - by 3.7 %.

In December 2020, compared to November, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices, manufacturing output increased by 0.7 %, including in manufacturing - by 0.2 % and in electricity and gas supply - by 5.8 %, but in mining and quarrying it decreased by 0.4 %.
