Yearly Latvian inflation 3% in June

The latest data from the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in June 2017, compared to June 2016 the average level of consumer prices increased by 3.0 %. Prices of goods grew by 2.6 % and prices of services by 4.0 %.

Compared to June 2016, in June 2017 the greatest pressure on the price changes was put by the rise in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, goods and services related to housing, prices in miscellaneous goods and services group, prices related to recreation and culture, prices in communication group, prices of goods and services related to transport, as well as decline in prices of clothing and footwear.

The average level of food and non-alcoholic beverage prices increased by 6.5 %. Rises were recorded in prices of meat and meat products, milk products, fresh vegetables, cheese and curd, milk, butter, fresh fruit, potatoes, coffee, eggs, yoghurt and bakery products.

During the year, prices of footwear fell by 11.2 % and prices of garments by 0.6 %.

Prices of goods and services related to housing went up by 3.2 % Increase was observed in maintenance charges in multi-occupied buildings, prices of heat energy and refuse collection, whereas drop was recorded in prices of natural gas.

Prices of goods and services related to transport grew by 1.4 %, which was mainly because of the rise in prices of fuels for transport (of 2.5 %) as well as prices of maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment. Reduction, in its turn, was registered in prices of passenger transport by air and by road.

Within communication group, the average level of prices rose by 5.5 %, which was mostly affected by the growth in prices of wireless and wired telephone services.

Prices of goods and services related to recreation and culture grew on average by 2.3 %, which was mainly because of the increase in prices of package holidays.

Within other commodity groups, the most significant growth was recorded in prices of tobacco products, motor vehicle insurance, pharmaceutical products, restaurant and café services, and articles for personal hygiene and beauty products.

During the month, the average level of consumer prices increased by 0.2 %

Compared to May 2017, in June 2017 the average level of consumer prices increased by 0.2 %. Prices of goods diminished by 0.2 %, while prices of services increased by 1.0 %.

According to the Finance Ministry the figures "did not cause any surprises, and consumer prices this year continue to develop according to projections."
