After redistribution of EU funding to mitigate the consequences of COVID-19 crisis, Interior Ministry (IM) received EUR 1.5 million for innovative solution development, mainly artificial intelligence (AI), the IM said on June 8.

It is planned to introduce speech recognition technology, virtual assistants (chatbots), analytical and mapping tools, and others. The innovations will allow for speed and efficiency increase at the ministry and the authority under its supervision.

Innovation projects will involve development of AI technology by local companies, such as language-based AI in cooperation with the Latvian company Tilde.

10 projects are intended in total. Speech recognition technology will provide automated document preparation and transcription of audio files. An integrated multilingual translation platform will allow for smooth communication without interpreter involvements.

The Ministry hope to save resources by avoiding lengthy discussions on written paper documents.

Virtual assistants will be introduced, which will provide support for employees and residents of the Ministry, faster access to information and services, problem reports, FAQs in several languages.
