Latvia bottom among Baltics for imports and exports

The amounts of Latvia's exports and imports were smaller than those of both Lithuania and Estonia last year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau's data.

Latvia's exports in 2016 amounted to €10.332 billion, Lithuania exported goods worth twice as much at €22.609 billion and Estonia's exports narrowly beat Latvia's too, on €11.883 billion.

Latvia and Estonia each shipped 74 percent of their exports to European Union countries, while Lithuania's exports to the EU countries stood at 61 percent of the country's total exports last year.

18 percent of Latvia's export of goods went to Lithuania and 12 percent to Estonia last year.

10 percent of Lithuania's exports went to Latvia and 5 percent to Estonia, while Estonia's exports to Latvia accounted for 9 percent and exports to Lithuania for 6 percent of the total amount of Estonian exports in 2016.

Last year Latvia's imports totaled €12.279 billion, Lithuania imported goods worth €24.836 billion and Estonia - €13.5 billion.

Latvia received 80 percent of its total imports from EU countries last year, the proportion for Lithuania was 70 percent and for Estonia 82 percent.

Imports from Lithuania made up 18 percent of total Latvian imports last year, and imports from Estonia 8 percent. Imports from Latvia accounted for 8 percent of total Lithuanian imports, and imports from Estonia for 3 percent. In the meantime, 8 percent of Estonian imports were from Latvia and 9 percent from Lithuania in 2016.

All three Baltic countries had negative trade balances last year. Latvia had a trade deficit of €1.947 billion, Lithuania's deficit was slightly larger on €2.227 billion and Estonia's slightly smaller on €1.618 billion.
