Beverage packaging deposit system will be entrusted to a company by beverage producers, Depozīta iepakojuma operators Ltd., State Environmental Service (VVD) told Latvian Radio December 29.

Two bidders competed for the position of package deposit system implementer. One – Depozīta iepakojuma operators – was offered by a beverage producer, the other – Nulles depozīts – by a waste manager, in cooperation with individual producers and the merchant association.

The VVD information shows that Depozīta iepakojuma operators received a higher rating on both criteria: for the submitted plan for the organization and implementation of the system and for part of the total amount of the deposit package.

Parts of the Depozīta iepakojuma operators Ltd are owned by the largest beverage producers, including Coca-Cola HBC Latvia, Aldaris, Cēsu alus, Cido Grupa and others. They represent more than 80 per cent of the production to which the new deposit system will apply. At present 13 per cent of the company is also owned by PET bottle processor PET Baltic, which is a waste management company of Eco Baltic Group.

Depozīta iepakojuma operators will be in charge of the system for seven years. The system is scheduled to start operating in February 2022.
