Latvia's hotel figures doubled in May

The data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that in May 2022 the number of non-residents and residents at tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 165.3 thousand, which is 2.3 times more than in May 2021. 

The guests spent 296 thousand nights in the establishments, which is 2.1 times more than in May of the previous year.

Over the first five months of this year Latvian tourist accommodation establishments hosted 586.8 thousand non-residents and residents, which is 2.3 times more than during the first five months of 2021 and 32.5 % more than during the same period of 2020. However, compared to the number hosted over the first five months of 2019 during the pre-pandemic period, the five months of this year indicate a decline of 36.6 %.

In May 2022 non-residents accounted for 53 % or 87.6 thousand guests hosted by tourist accommodation establishments, which is 6.4 times more than in May 2021. Compared to the May of the last year, the number of nights spent by non-residents at the establishments has grown 4.5 times and comprised 165.5 thousand. On average non-residents stayed for 1.9 nights.

Most of non-residents came from Lithuania (12.6 thousand), Estonia (10.6 thousand), Germany (9.7 thousand), United Kingdom (6.8 thousand), Finland (4.1 thousand), USA (3.9 thousand), and Poland (3.7 thousand).

The bulk of non-resident guests stayed in Riga (78.3 %), Jūrmala (7.7 %) and Liepāja (2.4 %).

In May 2022 the number of residents hosted at tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 77.7 thousand, which is 32.4 % more than May 2021. The number of nights spent by residents at the establishments constituted 130.6 thousand and has gone up by 26.1 % compared to May of the previous year.

Residents mainly stayed in Riga (24.4 %), Jūrmala (11.1 %), Liepāja (6.7 %), Cēsis municipality (6 %), Sigulda municipality (5.3 %), Kuldīga municipality (3.5 %) and Daugavpils (3.4 %).
