Medical and social protection should be priority of 2021 budget in Latvia

Take note – story published 3 years ago

There should be two priorities in the state budget for next year – medical and social protection, said Andris Skride, Chairman of the Saeima Social and Labor Affairs Committee (“Development/For!” political grouping) in an interview to Latvian Television on June 29.

“The less we spend on the health sector, the more medical staff and patients suffer,” Skride said.

He recalled that Ministry of Health (HM) is currently preparing two important reforms: reforming health workers' wages and arranging hospital networks.

“The wage reform is intended to introduce equality among medics,” Skride said, adding that this does not mean additional funding is not needed.

On Tuesday, June 30, the Saeima Social and Labor Affairs Commission will listen to HM specialists to see what progress is in wage reform, Skride noted. In turn, the reform of hospital network will be discussed later in the summer.
