Matīss told the Chinese official Latvia was ready to get involved in China’s New Silk Road initiative, which envisions development of overland trade routes between Europe and Asia. He said Latvia could provide integrated solutions in cooperation with its western partners as well as strategic partner Kazakhstan within this transit corridor, the ministry announced in a press release Wednesday.
He reminded his counterpart of the current ministry-led delegation visiting the western and central provinces of China, especially the booming city of Chengdu in Sichuan province. It’s in this region that Latvia hopes to develop trade ties to attract Chinese investment into Latvia’s transport sector, especially the rail and port infrastructures as well as the aviation sector.
