The new banknote sports new measures to prevent counterfeiting. It features a portrait window that reveals a portrait of Europa, a Greek mythology figure after whom the continent of Europe was named, in a hologram stripe. The design of the banknote has changed as well.

The new banknote enters circulation on November 25. Afterwards new designs of 50, 100, 200 and 500 euro banknotes will be released.

The new 20-euro banknotes will be released gradually, through banks to businesses to the general population.
