Retail turnover fell from September to October

Latest calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) and published November 29 show that, compared to October 2021, in October 2022 total retail trade turnover rose by 5.8 %.

Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 3.8 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 14.9 %, while turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel rose by 2.7 %.

Compared to October 2021, the most significant turnover growth was registered in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 47.8 %), retail sale of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary equipment (40.0 %) and retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (36.6 %).

"In October and November 2021 these sectors were affected by strict retail trade restrictions, which were implemented to reduce the infection of COVID-19. Turnover drops were registered in retail sale in stalls or markets (of 14.1 %), retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (10.7 %) and retail sale in stalls or markets (7.9 %)," explained the CSB.

Compared to September 2022, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in October 2022 fell by 0.8 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 1.3 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) did not change, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – fell by 1.6 % as consumers continue to tighten their belts.

Compared to September, in October 2022 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) fell by 0.2 %.
