Residents of Riga spend more on food and transport than residents of Vilnius and Tallinn, according to the latest Baltic household expenses study by the Swedbank Institute of Private Finances. The report was presented to the Riga City Council city development committee on Wednesday, reported BNS newswire.

According to February 2015 data, a family living in Riga has highest costs for food a month at €312, while a family in Vilnius had to spend €291 a month.

Riga also showed the highest public transport costs among its Baltic neighbors -- while Tallinn residents still enjoy public transport free of charge, expenses for residents of Vilnius have not changed, while public transportation fares in Riga rose 25 percent a year.

In line with the study on Riga sustainable development strategy until 2030 and Riga development program for 2014-20, people's assessment about the quality of public transport services in Riga has worsened--from 86.4 percent of respondents being positive about it in 2014 to 75.1 percent this year.
