Take note – story published 5 years ago

A total of 176 asylum seekers were registered in Latvia last year, according to the Office for Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

In 2017, 395 asylum seekers were registered in the country, but in 2016 - 350.

After asylum status is granted, the Office for Citizenship and Migration Affairs then decides whether to reject the applicant, or grant either refugee or alternative status.

A total of 47 foreigners were granted either refugee or alternative status last year in Latvia.

While precise data is not available, the vast majority of refugees who arrived in Latvia under the EU relocation scheme, have opted to leave the country.
