Many unvaccinated among the ranks of unemployed in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

The national requirement to vaccinate against Covid-19 has led to many unvaccinated people joining the unemployment ranks. More than 40% of those acquiring unemployed status in recent months are not vaccinated against Covid-19, Latvian Television reported January 16.

Between October 18, 2021 and January 7, 2022 a little more than 24 000 people gained unemployment status. Of them, 43%, or 10,303 had not been vaccinated.

The highest proportion of non-vaccinated unemployed was observed in the week from November 15 to November 21. On November 15 the requirement for public sector workers to start vaccination against Covid-19 entered into force, but from December 15, this requirement was extended to private-sector workers on-site.

The unemployment status was acquired mostly by people in retail trade, followed by the manufacturing industry.
