The State Police (VP) will focus on road safety during the Easter holidays from April 7 to 10. Raids and mass checks will be carried out by police not only on the main but also on the roads of local importance, Deputy Chief of the VP Traffic Safety Board, Arturs Smilga, said on Latvian Television broadcast April 6.

Mass checks could start on Thursday, April 6.

“Drivers have to count on the fact that these holidays the police can stop them, there will be mass checks and the police will monitor traffic,” Smilga said.

During last year's Easter holiday, 76 drunk drivers were caught and 4 drivers were under the influence of narcotic substances, Smilga said, adding that most of them were heavily intoxicated.

In general, Smilga estimated that the situation with regard to drink driving is not improving in Latvia: “Our statistics show that this situation is not improving with regard to drunk driving. If we look at traffic in general, the situation is getting better. Especially last year's death statistics is a good improvement."

As reported earlier, a staggering 3,500 drivers are stripped of their licenses due to drunk driving in Latvia each year – equivalent to nearly 10 every single day.
