Compulsory insurance for electric scooters as of next year in Latvia

Compulsory third-party liability insurance (OCTA) will also be required for electric scooters as of next year in Latvia, as stipulated by the amendments to the law adopted by the Saeima on Thursday, November 14, the Parliament's Press Service said.

Insurance for scooters is required because the damage to persons in accidents caused by scooters can also be relatively severe. Since April 1 this year, registration of electric scooters with the Road Traffic Safety Directorate has been compulsory and the obligation to insure them will also come into force on January 1 next year.

It is estimated that an OCTA policy for electric scooters could cost between €24 and €50 per year, similar to the current cost for mopeds.

The amended law also increases the limits for damage claims. Instead of the current €5.2 million, up to €6.45 million will be payable for damage caused to a person in an accident, regardless of the number of victims. For damage to property, the limit has been increased to €1.3 million from €1.05 million, irrespective of the number of third parties.
