More offenses but fewer casualties on roads this year in Latvia

This year the number of people killed in crashes has decreased, but the total number of administrative offenses in road traffic has increased, according to information provided by the State Police at a meeting of the Road Traffic Safety Council on November 14, LETA reports.

This year 89 people died in accidents in the first ten months of the year, compared to 109 in the same period last year and 96 the year before, the lowest number in Latvia's history. The biggest decrease was observed among cyclists. It must be noted that the cycling infrastructure in Rīga has seen major improvements over the past two years.

This year 256 people were seriously injured in crashes, compared with 324 last year and 362 in 2022.

This year, 14,475 accidents were recorded in the country in ten months, compared to 15,681 in the same period last year and 15,873 the year before.

In the first ten months of this year, 76,003 administrative offenses were recorded in the country. Last year there were 75,161 and the year before 75,776. This year's increase is mainly due to speeding offenses.

There were also 2,650 drink-driving offenses this year, compared with 2,921 last year and 3,651 the year before.
