In addition to day-to-day traffic control, the State Police will take increased care of traffic safety, with a particular focus on both vulnerable road users and drivers, as well as the proper carriage of passengers.
Police will also carry out more speed limit controls and check whether drivers are not drunk driving or driving recklessly.
On Wednesday, September 18, a "European day without people killed and seriously injured in road accidents" is planned. Through this safety action, police across the European Union will remind everyone of the importance of meeting all road safety requirements, as well as the fact that the safety and life of both themselves and the surrounding road users can depend on the behavior of each road user.
Last year, during this promotion on Latvian roads, State Police officers recorded more than 3,000 administrative violations in road traffic – 1,200 drivers were stopped and prosecuted by law enforcement officers, as well as 71 drivers were caught driving while drunk. Last year, September 20 was set to be the international European day without road deaths and seriously injured people – the goal of this promotion was achieved in Latvia. However, three people died in road accidents throughout the week, as well as 843 road accidents involving 130 persons were recorded.
This year until September 12, Latvia has recorded 12,010 road traffic accidents with 72 deaths and 2,730 injured. Last year during the same timeframe, 94 people died and 3,018 were injured.
