Transport Ministry official dismissed over Rail Baltica problems

On Tuesday, July 16, the government dismissed Ilonda Stepanova, the former State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport who was previously demoted in connection with the supervision of the implementation of the Rail Baltica project, Edgars Klētnieks, Advisor to the Minister of Transport, told LSM.lv.

The issue of Stepanova's dismissal was discussed in a closed-door session.

Klētnieks said that following a disciplinary investigation, Stepanova was disciplined with a demotion and transferred to the post of Director of the Communications Department on July 1 until February 10, 2025, when her term of office as State Secretary would have expired.

According to Klētnieks, the government decision is to dismiss Stepanova without extending her employment.

Transport Minister Kaspars Briškens (Progressives) had earlier said that the post should be filled by another candidate. A call for tenders will be launched in the near future.

The Disciplinary Inquiry Commission considers that Ilonda Stepanova committed several disciplinary offenses, as well as misconduct and negligence in the performance of her duties as a civil servant, the ministry said in a press release. However, the Ministry did not elaborate further on the nature of the offenses.
