Currently, two lanes are open to traffic in each direction on the Zemitāna Bridge - one lane for public transport and the other for other vehicles. Pedestrian movement is currently unaffected.
The middle part of the bridge is cordoned off, as dismantling works are currently underway there - the old road surface is being removed and preparations are being made for the renewal of the spans. After inspecting the bridge, Riga Mayor Vilnis Ķirsis (New Unity) said he was satisfied that the works were going according to plan, but also noted that some of the bridge structures were in better condition than originally thought.
The bridge will keep its existing piers and span, but the carriageway will be rebuilt, changing lane widths and building pedestrian footways and cycle lanes as wide as possible.
The cycle path will be separated from the carriageway, improving public transport flows. The public transport stop on the bridge will be maintained.
Riga City Council representatives pointed out that although everything will be done to reduce the risk of congestion during construction, it will not be possible to avoid traffic restrictions completely. Therefore, the residents of Riga are asked to be patient and understanding.
The construction works are scheduled to be completed by autumn 2026.
