Construction works of border crossing infrastructure have started in the undeveloped port area in Riga, Kundziņsala, State JSC "Valsts nekustamie īpašumi/State Real Estate" (VNĪ) said October 24.

The site is planned to include parking lots for vehicles, the main administrative building, which will house the State Revenue Service, the State Border Guard Service, and the Food and Veterinary Service, as well as the cargo control X-ray equipment building, control pavilions, and an outbuilding.

As VNĪ explained, this infrastructure will contribute to improving the efficiency of border control and will contribute to the development of the trans-European transport network.

According to the joint contract concluded on October 16 last year, the design and construction works, as well as the supply and installation of the technological equipment necessary for the performance of the control services functions, are being carried out by the association of persons "SENSUM, BBA and AE", with an estimated duration of 35 months, of which 12 months are reserved for design.

The new infrastructure will cover an area of 5.9 hectares and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The funds needed for the project have been raised through a grant from the recovery and resilience tool and state budget funding, totaling €39,134,316.

VNĪ said that the design and construction works are focused on the development and use of environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions. The use of technologies that will reduce dependence on non-renewable resources is envisaged.
